  • The adolescent population of the United States of America has scaled great heights since the year 1980. A major role has been played by immigrants in this achievement. Since the year 1980, a large number of students have been migrating to the United States for the purpose of education.
This is because the country has been offering excellent quality education and career opportunities.

There are many from the minority groups, deprived families and students with disabilities studying in the United States. There are approximately 4.5 million students with disabilities studying in this country. Almost 30% of the total student population is accounted for by the minorities.

The country offers enough opportunities for these students to realize their potential. Many special educators and teachers help these students cope with their academics. The country initiated multi cultural education and has since been justifying it.

This kind of education helps develop a multicultural perspective in students, enhances their self concept and fosters self understanding. Studying and learning with people from different parts of the world especially with those belonging to minorities’ leads to a better understanding of culture and people. It also gives students an ability to understand multiple cultures.

Sometimes certain cultures are found to be conflicting and have different national interpretations and perspectives of different events and values. The behavior of students and their point of view helps American students understand and learn better. This builds a strong relation between two students belonging to different cultures and backgrounds.

Multicultural education helps students take important decisions and take effective actions based on multicultural analysis taught to them. The boundary of teaching and learning is stretched far and wide with the help of multicultural education. Students face issues and events with broad and open minds.

Enforcement of multicultural education in the United States of America has made the level of stereotypes much lesser and has helped them maintain better relations with students who come from different parts of the world. It teaches them to respect people and not see any differences.

The process and habit of judging people also goes away with the system of multicultural education. Multicultural education can be brought in to effect with the help of the method of teaching which includes textbooks and other instructional material, curriculum, teacher’s outlook regarding this issue and the school climate. This is very important and should not be overlooked.

How teachers and instructors make use of this material is of extreme importance. The person teaching and the process of teaching are extremely important while imparting multicultural education. Teachers must make an effort to recognize the blatant as well as subtle forms of teaching while evicting differences, prejudices and stereotyping.

Isolation and language also play a very important role when it comes to teaching in a multicultural setting. Making students participate in community events and giving them an equal opportunity to exhibit their culture will create a positive environment for them and also enhance their comfort level with each other and foster their willingness to learn.
