Some social causes are close to our hearts. And Teach for America, is one of them. Every person who thinks of themselves as capable beings who can contribute to this initiative as a volunteering teacher would love to be selected.
But then the desires as such, stop cold. This is because it is not that easy getting in. In fact; it is shocking to see many people being rejected even though they have had a great academic record in the past.
One such individual is a fresh graduate from the Yale University. She counts herself lucky to have volunteered and being selected to teach the kids in the kindergarten class. She is one of the few lucky ones of the scores of University graduates who applied. In fact she was surprised that she got through. This Yale graduate stated that she knew a lot of talented friends who did not get through but were brilliant nonetheless.
Many students who applied are either scholars or really talented individuals and yet, they did not make it. Some are so disheartened that they won’t even tell you that they had applied. Many of them were shocked at not being selected because they had applied for the initiative really long ago.
Also some, who had applied, had gotten through. In short, the whole selection process is a major confusion. One student who did not apply for the fear of rejection offered to teach along with his friend as an assistant so that he could gain some experience and then when he applied for the initiative, his resume would hold some more weight.
The numbers of rejects this year are alarming. Even though there are fewer students who applied for this cause than in 2007, the numbers of rejects are more.
But why are so many students applying for this initiative? One of the main reasons that today Teach for America is a brand that everyone wants to associate themselves with. It is elite and therefore, being a part of it would mean that these students would get an edge over the others. And this is extended to vocations beyond teaching. This means that whatever the students might choose to do after teaching here, it will be a great add on.
Once an individual is selected for Teach for America, they have a guaranteed job for the next two years. This is another attraction as to why students want to be a part of this initiative. Plus the pay check is really good. One can earn up to $45000 which is similar to any corporate job and then you have a job immediately after you have graduated.
While being a part of the initiative is good, no one really knows why the students apply. Most of us do think and want to believe that it is because of the material gains and job guarantee that graduates from major universities like Yale and Harvard want to be a part of this initiative.
