  • The current state of education system in America is that of confusion. Major changes are being brought about and all aim for one goal – standardisation. In the beginning of the year President Obama started out with his policy for education – Race to the Top. However, now it is being panned by the critics. According to them, the President’s policy will leave out minority groups as well as those who cannot afford higher education.

But the President is sticking by his policy and stated that education and economics are different issues. He clarified his stance by saying that the unemployed population in America who never made it to college are facing a tougher situation than the ones who always had the opportunity to go to college. In fact for them the problem has doubled.

The President is all for tougher education systems that help students to set new benchmarks so that they have a better opportunity in college and at university levels. However, this too, is being met with a lot of opposition. Some groups have protested against the Race to the Top initiative by calling it a market-based program that was not well distributed.

However, the President stated that such comments are being passed by people who cannot handle changes and the initiative still stands strong.

College for many is a distant dream. And therefore, as the first citizen of America along with the others, the President feels that it is our duty to make this a dream come true for students. Most of them, if not all should be able to attend college.

Some schools are also protesting but then it is so because the principals and the teachers are forced to do something that they have never done before and that is to look into the curriculum and make it tougher. So it automatically becomes tougher both for the students and the teachers alike. More hard work which depends entirely on how the students yield results.

The President, however, agreed that so far his initiative was not doing much for the minority kids but he further added that they are working towards giving children from the minority section a better opportunity at education.

There is a lot of tension and turmoil in the air where education is concerned. The Obama government has given heads up for standardised education system and tests across the nation. This however, has not gone down well with many states. On the positive side almost 30 states have now accepted this and will work upon the system starting August as the new semester begins.

States like Arizona have openly declined that they do not want to be a part of this initiative and that they will continue to function in the manner in which they did before. With so many things going on, one can hope that their child gets a decent education to begin with. Else a confused education system is only going to raise confused children and finally, a confused economy.
