Recently it was reported that because so many students are enrolling for college and university courses, the on campus accommodation is filling up real fast. This means that you might have an apartment on the campus one year, the next year they might ship you off to a hostel.
Many students who have been in the colleges for a year or more, those who are seniors now, do not mind moving out and living outside the university. When they move out, it means that the university is not completely responsible for them and they must learn to look after themselves as they are on their own.
Many who opt for the MBA courses are already being placed at accommodations outside the college. This means they will be sharing their new home with other students as well. Students themselves are opting out too. Many are citing that they prefer being independent and do not want to follow the rules and regulations put up by the university. Yes, rules are a major issue with the seniors and many freshman year students. They believe they are old enough to look after themselves and abiding by the many rules on the college campus is not what they want to do anymore.
So the situation seems very rosy. Students live on their own much to their delight. They can do what they like, stay out late, drink inside the house and party to their heart’s content. But this is the only side they are looking at. And life always has more to it. Many authorities argue that students, however much they might prefer life outside the campus, will find it tough to sustain.
This is because life is not predictable anymore. Nobody is going to ask after them if there are no rules to be followed or anyone bigger authority to report to. But the problem at hand now is the fact that many students are enrolling and the campus cannot accommodate each and every one of them. Therefore, the university and college campuses are now tying up with nearby hostels and dormitories to get their students a place to live in.
This space crunch is of course related to the recession and also the lack of funds the educational institutions are now facing. Plus now they state that due to the baby boomer phenomenon from 1983 to 2000, there is a rise amongst children who are all of similar age and therefore, can apply for college. And in colleges where the cost of tuitions is low, the enrolment number is much higher than what it used to be.
In fact there are so many students now that the universities and colleges are running out of option to place them off campus as well. So what does one do in situations like this? Drop one’s idea of attending college for a year or two? Or is the situation only going to get worse? It’s a lot to think about!
