  • Time for our President to wake up

  • Recently, the meeting held by Obama in the Town hall with people affected by the hard economic situation turned more into a therapy session for his supporters who would not buy into his explanations. One of the disillusioned, a lawyer brought to Obama’s notice on how lives of students are being crushed by their debts.

A thirty year old law school graduate is no more inspired by Obama’s campaign as he struggles to pay up his debts and is not in a position to have a family or a mortgage either anywhere in the near future. No one was satisfied with Obama’s answer to the disgruntled graduate’s proclamation that the American dream is dying.  Our President certainly answered him in the most uninspiring manner.

All he had to say absolutely missed the point. He simply reiterated that America continues to be a country that billions from around the world look up to. It is quite tiring to think that our President actually thinks talking about our supposedly awesome country is going to make a difference to us. Talking about how every other country want to be like us is definitely not going to get us out of the tough times, no matter how inspiring a talk it is.

Again, our President just completely avoided addressing the issue of exorbitant student debt. Young intellectuals in our country want something more concrete and reassuring before they can make a real contribution. Nothing is as real as jobs and the way things are moving, nobody seems to be planning in this perspective. Eventually, yes, maybe the infrastructure and stimulus plans will create jobs. But, sadly, these jobs are not for the educated public of America. Six figure education debts cannot under any stretch of imagination be repaid with road repair jobs.

Relieving the pressure of debt faced by the educated public should be the first priority now and this is the only thing that can bring about any significant change. And change is definitely required to energize the American young whose support our President needs desperately.

Our president could have addressed such relevant concerns. He could have stated reality in simple language and maybe said something like American dream is certainly not dead. He could have infused hope with soothing words like the market value of your degree is just outstripped by the student debt thereby stunting your dream. He could have promised to do something about university tuition fee that have skyrocketed out of control rather than talking about people from around the world who are dying to emulate us.

What education debts are doing to suffering people in our country does not seem to move the President. Education costs a thousand dollars today where it should just cost one. He better do something to understand the seriousness of the student repayment situation in our country as this is an issue that has to be addressed at the earliest. After all, we should be careful about what we want people from around the world to emulate.
