You also want to speak the local language when possible and dress accordingly and try to blend in with the locals.

Another point that goes with travelling alone is don't get too comfortable just because you've been in that country for months and you think you know the place inside out or you understand the culture inside out. Even months after being there, you should always travel with a companion.
