  • Whether you’re looking for an afterschool job or entering the workforce straight out of college, finding your first job can be pretty intimidating. From searching for jobs, interviewing, and creating resumes; the process can seem overwhelming and complicated. Below, is a list of the most basic tips for success when starting your first job search:

    1. Brainstorm: Even though it’s your first job you are looking for, doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t try to find something you like. You can best do this by brainstorming your interests and skills and gearing these towards a list of applicable first job positions.

    2. Search: Just start. This is one of the key parts to a finding the first job right for you. Make sure to search local newspapers, job search engines on the internet, and ask at various businesses in person or on the phone. Make sure you are thorough with your search as you never know when a good first job will present itself.

    3. First impression: Even while searching, make sure that any contact you make with a potential employer-on the phone, through email, or in person-makes the best first impression possible. Dress, speak, and address them with the utmost in professionalism. No matter what type of job it is, an employer wants to know you take the opportunity seriously.

    4. Persistence: While applying to particular jobs, make sure you follow up to show your interest. If you sent in an application, call or stop by to inquire if they received it. If you had an interview, contact them to thank them for the interview. Doing so not only shows your enthusiasm for the opportunity, but also makes your name more memorable to employers.

    5. Flexibility: Make sure that you are flexible in your schedule. As this is your first job, you not only have to be flexible in what kind of job you do, but also in your schedule and pay. Be open to working any hours and also know that without experience-you have to start low pay-wise as well.
