  • Discrimination is a Double-Edged Sword

  • A historically Black college has been sued by The U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) on behalf of three White faculty members who were let go or denied a job based on their race. Benedict College is involved in a discrimination case which might be precedent-setting.

     

    The Federal officials have agreed to settle, claiming that the college will pay $55,000 to each of the claimants. The college also has to remind its staff about equal opportunities employment policies which forbid discrimination, train administrators and faculty members and make reports to the EEOC.

     

    Three faculty members were laid off or not hired because of their race and this is news? Wow! If it was the other way around, if it was blatant Black discrimination in the employment field, it would have made front page news. However, we only have three White persons claiming discrimination in the work place.

     

    What does it feel like to have that happen to a White person? Was it really a racially-motivated matter or were the staff members not competent at their jobs? Why did they settle for a mere pittance when the college said it did not discriminate? Either party could have taken it further in court. It could have been a real court case and it could have made front page.

     

    There is something more to this story than what meets the eye! The officials of the school face harsh charges so why did this happen? Maybe it was a case of the new applicant not being as capable for the Arts job as she presented herself to be. Perhaps the other two faculty members were let go for insubordination or other reasons which we are not privy to. And because there was not a court case with transcripts we shall never know. It is easy to yell, ‘Discrimination’ when the waters are murky at best.
