  • ORGANIZATIONAL SUMMARY:

    The Department of Computer Science and Engineering is seeking to hire a Program Coordinator/Advisor for the certificate programs in the department. The Program Coordinator/Advisor will advise students in the programs for course selection, registration, and progression, and work proactively to identify "barrier breakers for in-need students - serving as a counselor to these students. The person will track each student's academic progress and performance, and provide data needed for the management of the program. The person will organize information sessions, orientation events, and social events for promoting the cohesion within cohorts and encouraging peer learning, and for promoting the program to future students for recruitment. The person will assist the recruitment and admission effort and coordinate with faculty on application reviews and routing questions from applicants to faculty members. The person will work closely with Innovative Education (InEd) on marketing and recruitment efforts, and serve as a liaison between the College and InEd.

    POSITION SUMMARY:

    The Department of Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) is one of seven departments in the College of Engineering. CSE offers four undergraduate majors - computer science, computer engineering, cybersecurity, and information technology, and three graduate majors -- PhD, MS in Computer Science, and MS in Computer Engineering.

    RESPONSIBILITIES:

    Identify barrier breakers for the in-need students serve as a counselor to these students. Track students performance during and at the end of the semester. Use advising and grade records to identify students who need intervention, and relay concerns to supervisor. Monitor students' course completion and progression through program completion. Successfully encourage in-need students to meet with advisor.

    Create and manage course sections for certificate programs in Banner and manage course restrictions/permits. Advise students in the certificate programs on course selection, registration, and progression. Troubleshoot any issues or concerns with course selection, registration, and progression. Attend graduate program advising meetings.

    Organize information sessions and orientation events. Organize social and professional events to build community.

    Assist with application review.

    Research and participate in events on campus and in the community to increase awareness of CSE and the certificate programs.

    Engage with interested students and provide guidance on application and career planning.

    Work with USF Innovative Education and College of Engineering Marketing team to create necessary marketing tools to promote the certificate programs to prospective students and other stakeholders.


    Follow certificate programs students who transition into Master of Science in Computer Science (MSCS) program and provide follow-up advising and support. The person may be called upon to help on other graduate programs in the CSE department to which the pathway students may transition into.

    Performs other duties as assigned.

    POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

    MINIMUM:

    This position requires a Bachelor's degree in Education, Counseling or academic field directly related to the Advisor's specific responsibilities with a minimum of one year of experience in advising or related academic functions within higher education. Work experience may not be substituted for the Bachelor's degree requirement for this position.

    PREFERRED:

    Masters degree in counseling, education, business, marketing, counseling, or a related field. Experience working in an educational setting. Sufficient familiarity with the computing field to be able to relate to students entering computing disciplines. Plus a track record of positively impacting student success in a post-secondary institution.
